Step Up To Democracy Project
The Step Up to Democracy Project, was in partnership with KAWACC and Saathi House, aimed to develop the political leadership capacity of women and inspire a new generation of local leaders. The project focused on empowering women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to participate in civic life, take on leadership roles, and contribute to closing the gender gap in political representation.
Throughout 2018, the project delivered a series of women-led events in Bradford, designed to increase awareness of the suffrage movement and explore how its lessons relate to the experiences of Muslim women today. Participants engaged in discussions about the barriers they face, celebrated 100 years of women’s suffrage, and explored ways to actively participate in the democratic process.
Events included:
- History of the Suffrage Movement: Visual presentations and talks linking historical campaigns to contemporary issues faced by Muslim women.
- My Life in Politics: Local female MPs and councillors shared their experiences and insights into political life.
- Practical Information & Insights: Guidance on voter registration, civic participation, and understanding the impact of engagement.
- Local Heritage Tour: Visits to suffrage landmarks, the Town Hall, and the Council House to bring the movement to life.
Workshops supported participants’ personal and professional development, covering confidence building, leadership skills, CV and interview techniques, raising aspirations, and effective use of social media, including media training at a local radio station.
The project concluded with a celebratory event hosted by Saathi House in Birmingham, bringing together participants from across the UK to celebrate achievements, share learning, and reflect on the impact of the programme.
