Ammi's Achar

Ammi’s Achar

With funding from the Rank Foundation Profit for Good scheme, the Muslim Women’s Council launched its first social enterprise in 2019: Ammi’s Achar, with local women producing traditional mixed pickles (achar).

The project truly reflected the saying that “food brings people together.” While making the pickle, the women shared memories of cooking with their loved ones, told stories, sang songs, and developed both confidence and entrepreneurial skills.

The brand name Ammi’s Achar was inspired by the women themselves, all mothers. “Ammi” is the Urdu/Punjabi word for mother, and the name celebrates the warmth, care, and authenticity of a mother’s home cooking.

With its rich blend of spices and herbs, the homemade achar quickly became a family favourite, reflecting the authentic flavours of home-cooked meals.

This project not only created a successful social enterprise but also fostered community, creativity, and empowerment among the women involved.
