Fragile – Newly Launched Aunties Network

The FRAGILE Aunties Network was a three-year project building on the success of the original FRAGILE initiative, aimed at supporting women and girls facing child sexual exploitation (CSE) across Bradford. The project recruited and trained 30 local Muslim women to become a trusted network of ‘aunties’, figures within families and communities who could provide guidance, support, and a safe space for women and girls to seek help.

The network engaged with public organisations such as schools and community centres, and held informal ‘front room conversations’ in homes to raise awareness of CSE, empower mothers and daughters, and encourage early intervention. The project helped women and girls recognise risky and exploitative relationships, understand their rights, and connect with specialist agencies without feeling isolated or silenced.

By fostering early engagement and building communal strength, the network challenged the prevailing culture of silence surrounding CSE, particularly within patriarchal structures that often-prioritised family honour (izzat). While the focus was on women and girls, the network also offered support to men and boys affected by exploitation.

Through this initiative, FRAGILE strengthened community awareness, improved confidence and independence among vulnerable women and girls, and contributed to a safer, more informed, and resilient community across Bradford.
