Srebrenica Genocide - 30 Years On: A Time to Remember and Reflect

Srebrenica Genocide, Muslim Women's Council - Bradford

Today we mark 30 years since the Srebrenica genocide, when over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were brutally killed while the world watched and failed to act. It remains a searing reminder of what happens when hatred is normalised and human lives are devalued.

As we remember Srebrenica, we cannot ignore the echoes of that silence today, especially in Palestine and Gaza, where civilians continue to suffer under relentless violence, displacement, and siege. A genocide that is happening right now.

The pain of Srebrenica is not just in the past; it reverberates wherever justice is denied and humanity is disregarded. To say “Never Again” must mean standing against all forms of mass atrocity and oppression, whether in Bosnia, Rwanda, Sudan, Gaza, or elsewhere. Remembrance without action is empty. Solidarity without consistency is hollow.

Remembering Srebrenica is an act of moral clarity in a world still struggling with division, violence and hatred.

Let us honour the victims of Srebrenica on this blessed day of Jumma by recognizing shared struggles, defending truth, and refusing to be silent in the face of injustice anywhere in the world.

May the victims of Srebrenica rest in peace, and may their memory guide us toward a future rooted in dignity, justice, and humanity for all.
