The International Press Institute (IPI) and the International Media Support Organisation have posthumously awarded the Global Press Freedom Hero Medal to Mariam Abu Daqa, a journalist for Independent Arabic in Gaza, in recognition of her outstanding courage and dedication to truth. Mariam was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza in August 2024.
Chosen among seven journalists from across the world, Mariam’s award acknowledges her fearless reporting and her commitment to documenting the suffering of civilians in Gaza. Her work stands as a powerful reminder of the risks journalists take to ensure the world hears the truth.
The award ceremony will be held on 24 October 2025 at the University of Vienna, during the Global Conference of the International Press Institute. This recognition not only honours Mariam’s legacy but also draws attention to the increasing dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones.
💚 Her courage and sacrifice continue to inspire those who believe in justice, humanity, and the power of a free press.
