As Muslims around the world reflect on the life and legacy of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during Rabi al Awwal, it is an opportunity to return to the values that defined his example and consider how we carry them into our own lives, families and communities.
The life of the Prophet ﷺ was rooted in faith, but that faith was expressed through action. Compassion, justice, generosity, patience, responsibility and service to others were not abstract principles. They shaped how he treated his family, neighbours, those experiencing hardship and the wider society around him.
Allah describes the Prophet ﷺ in the Qur'an as a mercy to the worlds. That description reminds us that mercy should be reflected not only in what we say, but also in how we live and how we treat others.
For Muslim women in Britain today, the Prophetic example offers important lessons about recognising our responsibilities, contributing to society and using our skills and voices for the benefit of others.
At the Muslim Women's Council, our mission is to empower women for the benefit of society. We believe that when women are given opportunities to learn, lead, participate and support one another, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. They strengthen families and contribute towards more resilient communities.
This is reflected in our work across Bradford and beyond, from creating spaces for women to connect and learn, to encouraging leadership, developing skills, supporting wellbeing and creating opportunities for women to have their voices heard.
The Prophet's ﷺ example also reminds us of the importance of community. Islam encourages us to look beyond ourselves, to care for our neighbours, support those experiencing difficulty and contribute positively wherever we live.
These principles remain deeply relevant today.
At a time when many communities face division, loneliness and growing pressures, compassion can bring people together. Service can restore a sense of belonging. Dialogue can build understanding. Good character can challenge prejudice. And supporting people to recognise their own potential can create change that continues for generations.
Remembering the Prophet ﷺ should therefore encourage reflection as well as action.
How can we show greater compassion in our everyday lives?
How can we better support those around us?
How can we use our skills, experiences and opportunities to strengthen our communities?
And how can we ensure that the values we admire in the life of the Prophet ﷺ are visible through our own conduct?
The answers will look different for each of us. It may be volunteering, supporting someone experiencing hardship, strengthening family and community relationships, seeking knowledge, mentoring another woman, speaking against injustice or simply showing kindness where it is needed.
Small actions can have a lasting impact.
As we reflect upon the life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, may we renew our commitment to faith, compassion and service, and strive to embody those values in our homes, our communities and wider society.
May Allah enable us to follow his beautiful example with sincerity, wisdom and compassion, and to leave behind a legacy of benefit to others. Ameen.
