There are moments in life when Allah places someone in our path who quietly changes the way we see the world.
Not because they have all the answers but because their sincerity, character and faith encourage us to become better ourselves. A kind word, a gentle reminder, a listening ear or an example of patience can awaken something within us that we had overlooked for years.
As human beings, we often focus on what we have achieved, the responsibilities we carry and the routines that shape our daily lives. Yet true fulfilment is not found in worldly success alone. Our hearts find peace when they are connected to Allah and surrounded by people who encourage goodness.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of keeping good company. He likened a righteous companion to the seller of perfume: even if you do not buy from them, you benefit from their fragrance. In the same way, spending time with people of faith, wisdom and good character leaves a lasting impression upon our own hearts.
Throughout our lives, Allah blesses us with different relationships. Sometimes it is a lifelong friend who reminds us to pray. Sometimes it is a teacher who inspires a love for knowledge. Sometimes it is a parent whose quiet sacrifice teaches patience or a child whose innocence softens our hearts. Each of these relationships can become a means of drawing us closer to our Creator.
Our faith also teaches us to look beyond appearances. We live in a world where people are often judged by first impressions, assumptions or rumours. Islam calls us instead to seek sincerity, to give others the benefit of the doubt and to recognise that the true worth of a person lies in their taqwa, their consciousness of Allah.
The Qur'an reminds us that the closest friendships on the Day of Judgement will only endure if they were built upon righteousness. Relationships rooted in faith, kindness and mutual encouragement become a source of comfort not only in this life but, by Allah's mercy, in the next.
In our busy lives, meaningful companionship rarely happens by chance. It grows when people intentionally make time to sit together, remember Allah, share knowledge, listen with compassion and support one another through life's joys and challenges. This is the essence of suhbah – keeping the company of those who encourage us to grow in faith, strengthen our character and draw closer to Allah.
At Muslim Women's Council, this understanding of suhbah is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that strong communities begin with sincere relationships built upon faith, compassion and mutual support. Through our Tea & Chat gatherings, Ammi's Circle, workshops, community projects and the simple act of sharing a cup of tea together, we strive to create spaces where women feel welcomed, valued and connected.
These are more than events. They are opportunities to build lasting friendships, support one another through life's challenges, celebrate one another's achievements and nurture a genuine sense of sisterhood. In a world where many women experience loneliness or isolation, we hope our gatherings become places where hearts are uplifted, faith is strengthened and every woman knows she belongs.
Every conversation is an opportunity to learn.
Every gathering is an opportunity to build connection.
Every moment of suhbah is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah and to one another.
Every act of kindness has the potential to strengthen our communities.
True companionship is one of Allah's greatest blessings. When we surround ourselves with people who remind us of Him, encourage us in goodness and walk alongside us with sincerity, we discover that faith is not a journey we were ever meant to travel alone.
As the Prophet ﷺ said:
"A person follows the religion of their close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom they befriend." (Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi)
May Allah bless us with righteous companions, make us a source of goodness for others and grant us sincere suhbah that draws us ever closer to Him.
Ameen.
