The Beautiful Irony: Rethinking “Becoming Your Best Self”

The Beautiful Irony: Rethinking “Becoming Your Best Self”

“Become your best self.”

It sounds empowering. Motivating. Aspirational.

But it is worth pausing to reflect on what this phrase really implies.

Much of the modern self help industry centres on self actualisation. Design your dream life. Shape your destiny. Take control of your story. You are the author. You are the architect. You are in charge.

Yet beneath this messaging lies a hidden assumption.

To fully self actualise, a person would need complete knowledge of the future and complete control over every variable in their life. None of us possesses either. When we become consumed with crafting the “perfect” version of ourselves, we quietly place ourselves at the centre of everything. The pressure can be overwhelming. The anxiety can be constant. And often, the soul feels burdened rather than nourished.

There is a beautiful irony here.

When we stop striving to control every outcome and instead align ourselves with Allah’s plan, we often achieve more than we imagined, and with far greater peace.

Islam offers something deeper and more liberating.

Our purpose is not self actualisation. Our purpose is ‘ibadah, to worship Allah. To be devoted servants of our Creator. From that foundation flows our responsibility as khalifah, serving His creation with integrity, compassion and humility.

Success is no longer measured by status or achievement alone, but by sincerity, obedience and service. Planning becomes an act of trust. Effort becomes an act of worship.

This shift does not mean abandoning ambition. It means refining it.

Replace vision boards with high himmah intentions.

Plan with care, but trust Allah with the outcome.

Measure success by servitude, not by applause.

When we focus on becoming better servants of Allah, we are freed from the exhausting burden of trying to control what was never ours to control. In that surrender is strength. In that submission is dignity. In that alignment is true success for both this world and the Hereafter.
