Muslim Women’s Council Celebrates A Decade of the Curry Circle

Muslim Women’s Council has been delivering the Curry Circle, our weekly food initiative, since December 2013. The Curry Circle provides a hot two-course meal for people who are homeless or struggling to feed themselves. Together with our catering partner MyLahore Bradford, we have proudly provided over 100,000 hot meals since the project was established.

Due to the unprecedented effects of COVID-19, since March 2020 the sessions have been changed to a hot meal takeout service from the Manningham Library, from 4pm to 5:30pm on Thursdays.

The tenth anniversary of our very first session, on Tuesday 5th December, saw our volunteers coming together with sponsors and the Bishop of Bradford, Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth, for a celebration dinner at Eden’s Tearoom in Bradford.

Bana Gora, Chief Executive Officer of the MWC, said:

In these challenging times, we are thankful that we are able to support those in need. We are grateful to all our volunteers and supporters over the first decade of the Curry Circle, especially our catering partner MyLahore and our donors, for helping us distribute halal food across the district.

Shakoor Ahmed, Managing Director, MyLahore Group said

It’s been an immense honour for MyLahore to support the vital work of Curry Circle in Bradford. We’ve been blessed to donate tens of thousands of meals over the years. It’s also been heart-warming to host numerous meals for the homeless in our Bradford Flagship restaurant. As a local family-run business rooted in Bradford, we at MyLahore commend Muslim Women’s Council on their decade of work in the community with this project, and we look forward to many more years of collaboration in the future.

Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth, Bishop of Bradford, said:

It’s not just about food, it’s about community, about doing something with real meaning underneath it. We’re in really difficult times, and people are really hurting, here and across the world. And out of that has come something really beautiful. It’s a tribute to Muslim Women’s Council, but I also think it’s a tribute to Bradford, and how open the team are. On behalf of the city of Bradford, I always say this is Bradford at its best.
