As the UN General Assembly adopts a resolution declaring 15th March as an International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we remember our brothers and sisters who lost their lives during the Christchurch attack and those who have been victims of other hatred-motivated crimes.
Islamophobia is a rising phenomenon, and we see it practised by individuals and entities putting Muslims, especially hijab-wearing women, in difficult situations where they face hateful comments, deprivation of rights and properties, physical assault, and even death.
It is heart-warming to see world leaders unite to highlight this issue and its dangers, and urge the international community to strengthen efforts to combat it.
We, at the Muslim Women’s Council, welcome this resolution as it fosters the rights of practising one’s religion freely. We also take this as an opportunity to condemn all forms of discrimination based on religion and any other grounds.
