Uzbekistan lifts Hijab ban in schools after 27 years

Uzbekistan has lifted the ban on the Hijab in schools.

This decision was made in a bid to increase the attendance of devout families.

Although Uzbekistan has a Muslim majority, the government is staunchly secular.

The nation will allow headscarves and skullcaps in "white or light colours".

In July this year, Uzbekistan lifted the ban on wearing the Hijab in public places. This overturned the 'religious clothing ban', which was introduced in 1998.

The current Uzbek president has relaxed many secular laws imposed by his predecessor, including the ban on children attending mosques and the use of loudspeakers when calling the prayer.
