UN Issues $160 Million Appeal To Aid Pakistan In Flood Relief

In order to assist Pakistan in recovering from disastrous floods that have drowned over 1,100 people and ruined infrastructure and crops, the UN has launched a flash appeal for $160 million in emergency funding.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated in a video message for the launch of the appeal in Islamabad and Geneva on August 30 that "Pakistan is awash in suffering."

"The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids -- the relentless impact of epochal levels of rain and flooding."

With millions of people displaced from their homes, wrecked schools and healthcare institutions, and livelihoods ruined by the climate calamity, he claimed that the extent of challenges demand the world's collective and prioritized attention.

Authorities said they were rescuing stranded individuals and distributing aid to those impacted by employing military planes, helicopters, vehicles, and boats.

Over 33 million individuals have been impacted by the flooding, which was brought on by the torrential monsoon rains that have been falling since mid-June.

Large regions are still waterlogged even though rain halted three days ago and flood waters were receding in other places. According to estimates, up to one-third of the nation is currently under water.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 498,000 individuals have been forced to relocate, and initial estimates from the government indicate that the destruction cost the economy $10 billion in losses.
