Troy's First Mosque Inaugurated

Following long legal struggles, the Muslim community in Troy, Michigan, USA, inaugurated the city's first mosque.

The legal battles started when the leaders of the community center and mosque purchased the facility in 2018. The federal government sued Troy in 2019, claiming that the city violated federal law on religious land use when it rejected zoning approval for a mosque.

A federal judge determined in March 2022 that the city's zoning restrictions violated federal law by prohibiting the mosque from opening its doors.

The center is suing for $1.9 million in monetary damages, which includes legal bills, missed donations, and property equity.
