Top EU court rules employers can ban hijab in the workplace

The European Union's top court ruled that employers can ban Hijab in the workplace if the headscarf causes workplace conflict.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) said in a statement that this ban "may be justified by the employer's need to present a neutral image towards customers or to prevent social disputes".

This case was brought to court by two women in Germany who were suspended from their jobs after they started wearing Hijab.

The two women started wearing the Hijab after returning from parental leave. One of them refused to remove her headscarf, which resulted in several warnings and eventually in her being dismissed.

In Britain, several MPs labelled this ruling as Islamophobic and deeply flawed.
