After about 90 years, the first tarawih prayer (an evening prayer held especially during Ramadan) , has been performed at the Ayasofya Grand Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey.
Hundreds of worshippers have flocked to the mosque to participate in the historical event on the first night of the holy month of Ramadan.
Ayasofya was constructed in the year 532 CE. It was turned into a mosque in 1453 then into a museum in 1934. The building was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 1985 and has regained mosque status in 2020.
Ayasofya is also among Turkey's top tourism destinations and remains open for visitors.
