Muslim supermodel Halima Aden said the fashion industry made her compromise her religious believes.
My heart literally can’t be whole while this industry continues to praise me for “modesty” which even I was having so much internal conflict about it.
Aden, one of the world’s first hijab-wearing supermodels announced the news in a series of Instagram stories and posts. Aden said that it was during the Covid-19 pandemic that she had the time to reflect on her modelling career. The supermodel praised her mother for helping her “return to the real Halima”.
My mother is the only one who knows me best and while to the outside world I appeared to have had it under control.. she knew I was slowly changing over the years
The 23-year-old rewatched an old BBC Somalia interview thanks to her mother:
The reporter asked me if I had any plans for fashion and I basically said “oh just for fun but never more than a side hustle.
I was my most HAPPIEST & CONTENT back then.
Aden made it clear that she will only continue to work on her own terms.
If my hijab can't be this visible- I'm not showing up period.
This is the standard moving forward if you want to work with me. Come correct or don't come at all.
