Nigerian Inspector General of Police announced a new dress code permitting female police officers to wear a Hijab while in uniform.
This announcement raised controversial reactions within Nigeria. While the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations FOMWAN, welcomed the new policy characterising it as fair, a former Deputy Inspector General described the new dress code as illegal and unconstitutional.
“FOMWAN is appealing to our Muslimah in the Police Force to be of the best moral standards as exemplified by holy prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Hijab is our pride and our identity. It represents modesty, decency and spirituality. It attracts respect hence anyone wearing it must be of good conduct and character all the time. We congratulate the NPF for being the trail blazer in this regard.”
