Nazim Ali, our dedicated Curry Circle volunteer collected around £20,000 of donations for the vulnerable and took time off work to personally be on the grounds in poverty-stricken Sindh, Pakistan.
Nazim, careers adviser, distributed 150 packs of food, every single of which could feed a household of five for a month. Nazim travelled with the Nelson, Lancashire-based charity Hope for Mankind, contributed to the provision of 600 hot meals to Sindhi children, as well as to the establishment of a store encouraging self-employment and breaking out of the downward spiral of poverty.
Such was the poverty, I saw children with little or no clothing. It was physically and emotionally challenging seeing that, but the aid I provided put smiles on so many faces. said Nazim.
Sindh was one of the areas hardest hit by last year's destructive Pakistan floods, that killed over 1,700 people and injured numerous others.
The floods, which have been referred to as among the most catastrophic natural disasters in recent memory, also displaced over two million people.
I saw first-hand how, six months on from the floods, water levels were still high. I saw people living in tents, after floods destroyed their homes. said Nazim.
The setup of more than 100 water pumps in Pakistan was also part of Nazim's altruistic activities, backed by Hope for Mankind.
I was heartened to find that some of water pumps, installed three years ago, are still working. Another highlight of my trip was that I was able to visit all 35 new two-room houses I had built for the poor in Sindh after my ninth Ramadan 10k run in Blackpool last year.
