On July 18, 2021, Saudi Arabia has allowed women to register for the annual Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage without a male guardian on the terms that they go in a group.
“Those wishing to perform Hajj will have to register individually. Women can register without a Mehram [male guardian] along with other women,” said the Saudi Hajj ministry.
Mehram is a male relative, generally related by blood, and should be above puberty.
This decision came as part of the Saudi Arabian government’s efforts to enhance women’s rights in the kingdom.
