Muslim student was informed that her hijab violated uniform code on the first day of school

A teacher reprimanded a Muslim eighth-grader, Afnan Zeabi, for violating the dress code by donning a headscarf on her first day of class, which left her with a terrible emotional experience. Zeabi, attends Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston.

The "School Uniform Compliance Form" the student received from a teacher for wearing the hijab was uploaded online by a family member. Within the depiction of the violation, the headscarf worn by Muslim ladies was incorrectly spelled as “jihab.”

The institution admits that the "handling of the situation came across as insensitive."

In an email statement, the school noted that while it permits students to dress in religious garb "aas an expression of their sincerely held beliefs," it also requires them to bring a letter "expressing this desire from a member of their clergy."
