The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage body has granted eight mosques in the northern Ivory Coast a heritage status.
The mosques in the towns of Tengréla, Kouto, Sorobango, Samatiguila, M’Bengué, Kong and Kaouara became the first African property inscribed on the prestigious list during this year's session.
These mosques presented highly important testimonies to the trans-Saharan trade that facilitated the expansion of Islam and Islamic culture and reflected a fusion of Islamic and local architectural forms in a highly distinctive style that has persisted over time.
