Egyptian referee, Sarah Gamal, is the first hijab-wearing referee to participate in the basketball competition in the Olympics after the International and African Basketball Federations agreed that women referees can wear the hijab.
In 2017, the Confederation of African Basketball approved the wearing of headscarves during matches, whether for female players or referees.
