Disposable surgical Hijab developed for Muslim health workers

Farah Shaheera Roslan- Disposable surgical Hijab

Dr Farah Shaheera Roslan, a Malaysian surgeon-in-training in the United Kingdom, has successfully developed a disposable surgical Hijab for female Muslim health workers.
Dr Farah said in an interview that many Hijab-wearing health workers chose not to enter an operating room fearing that they might infect it.

I didn't feel it was right. You shouldn't need to choose between careers. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

This injustice is what led her to develop disposable Hijabs. As a first step, she contacted friends and suppliers in Malaysia to get some ideas.
She later found a UK supplier who sent her fabrics of different sizes and materials for testing.
After the design was approved, the first batch of disposable Hijab supplied to all operating theatres under the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Trust.

Even if people can't relate to the disposable Hijab, seeing a Muslim woman out there wearing it shows that diversity exists and that representation matters.

Now working with the Northampton General Hospital, Farah is also collaborating with the British Islamic Medical Association to help produce guidelines on the use of Hijab in clinical settings.
