Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj (the Night Journey & Ascension)

Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj (the Night Journey & Ascension)

Glory be to the One Who took His servant (the Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH)) by night from the sacred Mosque (in Makkah) to the farther Mosque (in Jerusalem) whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Surah Al-Isra 17:1

Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj (the Night Journey & Ascension) is a miracle second only to the revelation of the Qur’an.

Israa is an Arabic word referring to Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) miraculous night journey from Makka to Jerusalem with the angel Jibril (as) on a Buraq:

‘I was then brought a white beast which is called al-Buraq, bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. Its stride was as long as the eye could reach'. [Muslim].

Mi’raj is Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) ascension to heaven.

This night is very important as it happened at a very crucial stage in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He lost his uncle Abu Talib and his beloved wife Khadijah.
