About the National Sharia Council

Welcome to the National Sharia Council (NSC) online platform. The NSC was formed to help address matrimonial challenges of Muslims living in the United Kingdom and find solutions in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.

The NSC comprises members from the major schools of Islamic legal thought (mad’hab) and is widely accepted as an authoritative body with regards to Islamic law.

We primarily provide services to the Muslim community in Great Britain. The NSC receives many enquiries regarding social, family and matrimonial issues and provides Islamic opinion and guidelines on the basis of discussions and consultations made in this respect at its meetings.

The NSC has various Ulama, Imams and Muslim male and female Scholars representing various schools of Jurisprudence found in Great Britain. Deliberations are made on a case by case basis, with input from UK family law practitioners and other specialists as and when required.

The NSC is also approached by institutions, organisations and individuals from diverse spectrum of ethnicity and faiths seeking expert opinion in accordance to Islamic Law on social, theological, cultural and academic issues.

The NSC receives enquiries which are answered in accordance with the Sharia. The NSC also helps the community by offering its services of raising awareness about the dynamics of family life, offering marriage-preparation workshops and facilitating reconciliation and mediation support in marital disputes.

The Quran and Sunnah lays great emphasis on dealing with each other honourably with dignity and respect and not to demand return of gifts if for any reason the marriage does not work out.
